    • Healthy Comfort Food: Made with lean ground turkey and a flavorful blend of Italian seasonings, this meatloaf is a healthier twist on a classic favorite, without compromising on taste.
    • Versatile and Delicious: Topped with a tangy tomato sauce, this Italian meatloaf recipe is packed with flavor and pairs well with a variety of sides. It’s a great option for meal prep or a satisfying family dinner.

    🥘 Ingredients

    Italian Turkey Meatloaf Ingredients.
    • Ground Turkey Breast – The main ingredient, ground turkey, provides a lean and healthy base for the meatloaf. It has a mild flavor that absorbs seasonings well, making it a versatile choice for a lighter take on traditional meatloaf.
    • Egg – The egg acts as a binder, helping to hold the meatloaf together and giving it a cohesive texture. It also adds a bit of richness to the mixture.
    • Italian Seasoned Bread Crumbs – These breadcrumbs add texture and flavor to the meatloaf, contributing a subtle seasoning that complements the Italian flavors of the dish. They help to absorb moisture and keep the meatloaf from becoming too dense.
    • Italian Seasoning – A blend of dried Italian herbs, Italian seasoning enhances the meat loaf with a robust, herby flavor profile. It typically includes basil, oregano, thyme, and rosemary, adding depth to the overall taste.
    • Garlic – Minced garlic adds a pungent, aromatic quality to the meatloaf, infusing it with a savory and slightly sweet flavor that enhances the meat and seasonings. You can also try using garlic powder or garlic salt, but make sure to adjust accordingly.
    • Ground Black Pepper – Black pepper provides a touch of heat and complexity, balancing the flavors in the meatloaf without overpowering it. Adjust the amount to suit your taste preferences.
    • Salt – Salt is essential for enhancing the natural flavors of the ingredients and bringing out the savory notes in the meatloaf. It’s best to adjust the salt to taste, ensuring a well-seasoned dish.
    • Tomato Sauce – Tomato sauce is used both in the meatloaf mixture and as a topping, adding moisture and a tangy sweetness that complements the savory flavors of the meatloaf. It helps to keep the meatloaf juicy and flavorful. You can also opt to use a jar of marinara sauce.

    🔪 Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C). Spray a baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.

Mix the Meatloaf Ingredients: In a medium bowl, combine 1 pound of ground turkey, 1 egg, ¼ cup of Italian seasoned breadcrumbs, 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning, ½ clove of minced garlic, ½ teaspoon of ground black pepper, and a pinch of salt (¼ teaspoon.) Mix until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.

    shaped meatloaf.

Shape the Meatloaf: Form the turkey mixture into a loaf shape and place it in the prepared baking dish.

Bake the Meatloaf: Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes. After 40 minutes, spoon about half of the 2 cups of tomato sauce over the meatloaf.

Continue Baking: Return the meatloaf to the oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the meatloaf is no longer pink in the center and an instant-read meat thermometer reads at least 160°F (70°C).

Rest the Meatloaf: Remove the meatloaf from the oven and let it rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing.

Warm the Tomato Sauce: While the meatloaf rests, heat the remaining tomato sauce (or marinara sauce) in a small saucepan over medium heat.

Serve: Slice the meatloaf and serve with the warmed tomato sauce drizzled over the top of the meatloaf.

    👩🏼‍🍳 Chef's Tip

    • For a meatloaf with the best texture and flavor, don’t overmix the meat mixture. Combine the ingredients until just mixed to ensure the meatloaf stays tender and doesn’t become dense. Additionally, let the meatloaf rest for a few minutes after baking; this helps the juices redistribute, making for a juicier, more flavorful meatloaf when sliced.

    📖 Substitutions & Variations

Different Meat – For a variation, you can substitute ground turkey with ground chicken or lean ground beef. Ground chicken offers a similar lightness as turkey, while lean beef will give a richer, more robust flavor. Adjust the seasoning to match the meat you choose.

Different Breadcrumbs – Instead of Italian seasoned breadcrumbs, try using plain breadcrumbs or panko for a different texture. Plain breadcrumbs will still add structure but without the added seasoning, while panko will give the meatloaf a slightly crispier crust.

Extra Vegetables – For added nutrition and flavor, mix in finely chopped vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, or zucchini. These veggies will add moisture and a touch of sweetness, enhancing the meatloaf's overall taste and texture.

Spices and Herbs – To vary the flavor, consider adding spices such as cumin or chili powder, or herbs like rosemary or fresh basil. Cumin adds a warm, earthy flavor, while rosemary brings a piney, aromatic note that pairs well with the turkey.

Cheese – For a cheesy twist, mix in some shredded cheese like mozzarella cheese or parmesan cheese into the meatloaf mixture. Mozzarella will add a gooey texture, while parmesan will contribute a sharp, savory kick.

Toppings – Experiment with different toppings for the meatloaf. Try adding a layer of sliced tomatoes or a sprinkle of fresh herbs like fresh parsley or thyme before baking. These additions can bring extra freshness and flavor to the dish.

    🍴 Serving Suggestions

Pair with a Simple Salad – A fresh side salad with mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, and a light vinaigrette complements the rich Italian turkey meatloaf. The crispness of the salad provides a refreshing contrast to the hearty meatloaf. Try my fennel salad!

Add Roasted Vegetables – Roasted vegetables like carrots, Brussels sprouts, or green beans make a great side dish. Their caramelized sweetness pairs well with the savory meatloaf and adds extra nutrition to your meal. Try my roasted baby broccoli!

Serve with Mashed Potatoes – For an extra comforting meal, pair the meatloaf with creamy mashed potatoes. The smooth, buttery potatoes are perfect for mopping up any extra tomato sauce. Great with my favorite mashed potatoes recipe.

Pair with a Light Red Wine – A light red wine, such as Pinot Noir or a fruity Merlot, pairs nicely with the flavors of the meatloaf. These wines have enough body to complement the turkey without overpowering it.

Offer a Fresh Bread Basket – A basket of warm, crusty bread or dinner rolls is great for soaking up the savory tomato sauce. It adds a satisfying texture and makes the meal feel even more comforting. We love it with my butter rolls.

    💭 Recipe FAQs

Can I use a different type of ground meat for this recipe?

Yes, you can substitute ground turkey with other types of ground meat, such as ground chicken, lean ground beef, or even pork. Just be aware that different meats may affect the flavor and fat content of the meatloaf. For example, ground beef will make the meatloaf richer and more flavorful, but it may also be higher in fat.

How can I make this meatloaf gluten-free?

To make the meatloaf gluten-free, substitute the Italian seasoned breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs or crushed gluten-free crackers. Make sure that all other ingredients, including the Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard, are gluten-free as well.

Can I prepare the meatloaf ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the meatloaf ahead of time. Assemble the meatloaf mixture and shape it, then cover it tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before baking. This can be a great time-saver for busy weeknights. If you need to freeze it, do so before baking, then thaw and bake when ready.

    🥣 Storage & Reheating

    Storage

    • Refrigeration: Store leftover meatloaf in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep well for up to 3-4 days.

    Reheating

    • Oven: Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Place the meatloaf on a baking sheet pan or in an oven-safe loaf pan, cover with aluminum foil to prevent drying out, and heat for about 15-20 minutes or until warmed through. If reheating individual slices, you can use a toaster oven for a quicker option.
    • Microwave: Place a slice of meatloaf on a microwave-safe plate and cover with a microwave-safe lid or paper towel. Heat on medium power for 1-2 minutes, or until heated through. Be cautious not to overheat, as this can dry out the meatloaf.

    Freezing

Thawing and Reheating: To thaw, move the meatloaf to the refrigerator and allow it to defrost for 24 hours. Reheat using the oven or microwave as described above. For best results, reheat from thawed rather than from frozen.

Freezing: To freeze, let the meatloaf cool completely, then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Place it in a freezer-safe airtight container or resealable freezer bag. It can be frozen for up to 3 months.

    👩🏼‍🍳 Top Tips

Use Lean Ground Turkey – Opt for 93/7 ground turkey for a balance of lean meat and moisture. This helps keep the meatloaf flavorful without being too greasy. Avoid using extra-lean turkey, as it can lead to a dry texture.

Mix Gently – Combine the ingredients just until mixed. Overmixing can make the meatloaf dense and tough. Use your hands or a wooden spoon to mix until the ingredients are evenly distributed.

Shape Evenly – Form the meatloaf into a uniform shape and size on the baking sheet. This ensures even cooking and helps the meatloaf cook through without drying out.

Let It Rest – Allow the meatloaf to rest for 5-10 minutes after baking. This helps the juices redistribute and makes it easier to slice without falling apart.

Monitor Internal Temperature – Use an instant-read thermometer to check for doneness. The meatloaf should reach an internal temperature of 160°F (70°C) to ensure it’s fully cooked and safe to eat.
