During a previous phase of my life, I often ventured to Tucson, Arizona, where one culinary delight stood out: the irresistible Sonoran hot dogs. However, with my visits to Tucson becoming less frequent, my longing for these regional treats persisted. Fortunately, I've uncovered a method to recreate these Tucson delights in the comfort of my own kitchen. With just a few readily available ingredients from the local supermarket, you too can savor these delightful dogs.

What is a Sonoran Hot Dog?
A Sonoran hot dog is a beloved regional specialty originating from the Sonora region of Mexico, particularly popular in cities like Hermosillo and Ciudad Obregรณn. It's characterized by a unique combination of flavors and textures, featuring a bacon-wrapped hot dog served in a soft bun, topped with a variety of condiments such as sautรฉed onions, chopped tomatoes, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, and hot sauce. This mouthwatering creation embodies a fusion of Mexican and American culinary influences, resulting in a deliciously satisfying street food experience.
This was inspired by my bacon wrapped hot dogs and this dish pairs well with me creamy potato salad.

About the Buns
The bolillo buns are not your typical hot dog buns. However, you can easily find them in any Mexican market or opt for soft extra-large hot dog buns from your preferred supermarket. Remember to steam the bun (never grill) to maintain its softness and warmth while enjoying your Sonoran hot dog.
About Coleman All Natural Meats
The Coleman Way is their commitment to quality. Taking pride in humanely raised hogs on family farms in the U.S.A with no antibiotics ever, no added hormones and all vegetarian feed. The result is premium, great tasting, all-natural meats you can feel good about serving to family and friends.

Step 2: Cook the onions and hot dogs in a large skillet. Keep rotating the hot dogs until all sides are evenly crispy.
Step 3: While the hot dogs are cooking, steam the buns by loosely wrapping them in paper towels and microwaving them for about 7 to 10 seconds until soft and warm.
Step 4: Once the hot dogs and buns are ready, place each hot dog in a steamed bun.
Step 5: Add cooked or raw onions.
Step 6: Add chopped tomato
Step 7: Spread mayonnaise over the tomatoes and press lightly to adhere to the tomatoes.

Step : Add mustard, ketchup, beans, avocado, pickled jaleopeno, or hot sauce if you like!
๐ฉ๐ผโ๐ณ Chef's Tip
- The mayonnaise over the tomato acts as a binder of the ingredients so that the vegetables stay in place when eating the hot dog.

๐ญ Recipe FAQs
Sonoran hot dogs stand out for their unique combination of flavors and toppings. They typically feature a bacon-wrapped hot dog served in a soft bolillo bun and topped with a variety of condiments such as sautรฉed onions, chopped tomatoes, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, and hot sauce. This flavorful combination sets them apart from traditional hot dogs.
Sonoran hot dogs originated in the Sonora region of Mexico, particularly in cities like Hermosillo and Ciudad Obregรณn. They became popular in the 1980s and are now enjoyed throughout Mexico and in regions of the United States with significant Mexican-American populations.
Common toppings for Sonoran hot dogs include sautรฉed onions, chopped tomatoes, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, and hot sauce. Additionally, some variations may include ingredients like avocado, whole cooked beans, cheese, sautรฉed mushrooms, or pickled jalapeรฑos for added flavor and texture.
๐ฅฃ Storage & Reheating
Storage: If possible, store all the ingredients separately in small containers. Assemble the hot dogs when ready to eat. Alternatively, if you have extra assembled hot dogs, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap before refrigerating to maintain freshness.
Reheating: Microwave the assembled hot dogs for 30 to 45 seconds or until heated through. Note that the bun may become soft and slightly soggy after reheating.
Freezing: It's not recommended to freeze fully assembled Sonoran hot dogs as the texture and quality may suffer.
However, you can freeze individual components:
- Hot dogs: Wrap each hot dog tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil before placing them in a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 1-2 months.
- Bacon-wrapped hot dogs: Follow the same process as above for freezing hot dogs.
- Sautรฉed onions and chopped tomatoes: Place them in separate airtight containers or freezer bags and store them in the freezer. They can be frozen for up to 2-3 months.
๐ท Wine Pairing
Zinfandel is known for its bold fruit flavors, spice, and pepper notes, which can complement the savory and spicy elements of Sonoran hot dogs.
๐ฉ๐ผโ๐ณ Top Tips
- Wrap the Bacon Securely: When wrapping the bacon around the hot dogs, ensure it is tightly secured to prevent it from unraveling during cooking.
- Rotate Hot Dogs While Cooking: When cooking the bacon-wrapped hot dogs in the skillet, be sure to rotate them occasionally to ensure that all sides cook evenly.
- Properly Steam the Buns: To steam the buns, loosely wrap them in paper towels or place them in a large ziplock bag before microwaving for about 7 to 10 seconds.
