If you're headed to Paso Robles, I have the perfect guide that covers wineries, restaurants, accommodations, and weather (yes, this is important!)
Why You'll Love Paso Robles
Paso Robles is one of our favorite places to visit. It's halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco (about a 3 hour drive.) If you're traveling by plane you can also arrive through the San Luis Obispo Airport (SLO.)
Once you arrive you immediately greeted by beautiful views, delicious food, and most importantly - great wine! We go to Paso Robles a few times each year to pick up our wine shipments and enjoy the town. So let's get this list started with some of our favorite places to stay, eat, and drink.
Please note this in an evolving list. Check back often as we continue to visit Paso Robles, CA!
My Favorite Accommodations
I highly recommend staying within walking distance of Downtown Paso Robles. You'll find my list is FULL of restaurants, bars, and tasting rooms that are right on (or nearby) the main square.
The Paso Robles Inn is my preferred place to stay, but it books up quick. The Piccolo, which is the sister property to Paso Robles Inn and right next door, is also a great option. However, it is a pricier option. Another option, although not really in walking distance (unless you're ambitious) is the Hotel Siri.
I've also stayed in quite a few AirBnB's and VRBO's, which can be a great option for larger groups.
Paso Robles Inn
The best part of the Paso Robles Inn is the location. The property itself is a little old and outdated, but still clean and a great place to rest your head. Paso Robles Inn is connected by a walkway to the Piccolo Inn which is a shared property.
The Piccolo Hotel
The Piccolo Hotel is a pricer (and newer) option if you're looking to stay in the downtown area of Paso Robles. It is connected by a walkway to its sister property, Paso Robles Inn. I love the modern amenities at the Piccolo Hotel as well as the rooftop bar (a must visit even if you aren't staying at The Piccolo Hotel or Paso Robles Inn,) and the Champagne vending machine - Yes, I said Champagne vending machine! You get a token upon check in to redeem for your bottle during your stay. The Piccolo Hotel is by far my favorite option for accommodations in Paso Robles.
Hotel Siri Downtown - Paso Robles
We just recently stayed here after not being able to get a reservation at The Paso Robles Inn or Piccolo, and although it's a bit further away from the area we like to hang out in, the property itself is VERY nice. It's a new property and the amenities are great, but the location is not really walking distance to the restaurants and wineries. There is a fitness room, a rooftop deck to enjoy a picnic and a bottle of wine, laundry, and plenty of parking. The property is quiet and peaceful. Oh, and we also had a balcony, which was cool even though we didn't use it.
AirBnB
This is our favorite AirBnB that we've stayed at in Paso Robles. The house itself is nice, but the location really makes it worth the stay. It's just a stones throw away from The Piccolo Hotel which means it's close to the park, downtown, the bars, tasting rooms, and restaurants. We stayed with 2 other couples (our friends) and had nothing short of a great stay!
Restaurants
The food is Paso Robles is some the best we've ever had. Here are a few of my recommendations for cocktails and food.
The Alchemists Garden
Located right off the main square in Paso Robles is a fun spot to grab a drink! The cocktail menu is always changing and each drink is unique and adventurous! I recommend trying the zodiac cocktail that changes throughout the year. Have your camera ready because ordering a drink here is a production that you'll want to rememberer. They also have an extensive dinner menu full of inventive and delicious dishes.
Il Cortile Ristorante
My all time favorite restaurant in Paso Robles. I've never had anything here that was not just absolutely phenomenal. The pasta is handmade, you can bring your own wine, the desserts are incredible. If there is one thing I think you MUST do in Paso Robles, it's to dine at Il Cortile.
The Hatch Rotisserie & Bar
It's all hail to the bird at The Hatch. This downtown Paso Robles restaurant reveres the rotisserie and roasted chicken is indeed the must order. Brined and smoky, the half Mary's organic chicken is sided by a vanilla-maple slaw, buttermilk dip and Hatch hot sauce, and its perfectly salty skin coupled with flavorful meat gives an expensive steak a run for its money. The skillet cornbread, finished with brown butter, flaky salt and honey, is a worthy sidekick. With down-home style cooking, it may come as no surprise that cream pies are the focus come dessert. Order the chocolate cream pie, an individually-sized treat served in a metal pie tin. How could you ever go wrong with chocolate pudding and salted caramel in a coconut graham crust?
Brunch
To be clear....the place is called Brunch, and yes, they serve brunch - and it's DELICIOUS. Unfortunately they don't take reservations, so if you're in town with a large group on a weekend, go early, or come back on a weekday. Try the French toast and breakfast burrito to get your day started!
La Cosecha Bar + Restaurant
The sister restaurant to Il Cortile, we've dined here a few times and enjoyed every bite! The menu is full of latin flavors made with fresh ingredients. I recommend ordering one of their unique pizzas, creative cocktails, small plates, and, of course, the paella!
Jeffery's Wine Country BBQ
This is not so hidden gem located in an alleyway in Downtown! Feel free to dine in but Jeffery's is also perfect for pickup to take to a winery that allows outside food. I honestly recommend everything on the menu, but the tri-tip sandwich is exceptionally delicious. I also enjoy the BBQ chicken salad on a hot day.
Red Scooter Deli & Desserts
This is another great option for pickup to take to restaurant that allows outside food. The menu is a little too large for my liking, but if you like having a lot of options, you're in luck. We had the Thai tofu wrap, Italian Scooter, and Tuna-licious. I would get any of those menu items again!
On our most recent trip I got the lunch box and it was the perfect meal! Conveniently packed to take to a winery, it came with a sandwich, chips and a cookie! If the Paso Robles weather is nice, you can even eat in the square.
Le Petites Canailles (LPC)
What a place to dine! After walking by a few times, we finally made a reservation and this restaurant is now on our must go to places when we're in Paso! I recommend the seasonal pre fixe menu with the wine pairing. And if you happen to be there when the have the caviar tots on the menu...you absolutely have to order them! I dream of these tots! What I love most about this restaurant is the fine dining mixed with a family friendly vibe.
Twisted & Glazed
We adored this small donut shop that is making gourmet homemade donuts right inside the front door! They have seasonal flavors as well as original donuts like a hibiscus and key lime pie donut! They also are serving up great coffee beverages! This place is definitely worth a stop! Don't forget to grab some donut holes as well.
Wineries
Daou Vineyards
I was sold on Daou the moment we showed up to our first tasting. We enjoyed a delicious wine tasting, with great views, and superior customer service. We also joined their wine club! Every time we're in town, we make it a point to go to Daou to pick up our shipments and enjoy the rest of the town. Daou is seriously doing it right! They have taken old school Paso winemaking and elevated it!
Sextant Wines
One of our favorite stops when we drive home to Los Angeles is to stop at Sextant Wines in Edna Valley for lunch and wine tasting. The good news is, that they also have a tasting room in Paso Robles, as well as another winery, Paris Valley Road Estate Winery. On our next visit, we'll be visiting Paris Valley and can't wait to share feedback about this winery.
Sextant wines is a great place to enjoy quality wine with a great ambiance and wonderful customer service.
Epoch Estate Wines
Located on the west side of Paso Robles, the drive to Epoch is full of stunning views! As we turned up the driveway to the winery, I felt like I was headed to camp. The big, full trees, and the light peeking through the leaves casting shadows...it is simply beautiful. The wine is just as stunning. They produce Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Petite Sirah, Counoise, Zinfandel, Tempranillo, Marsanne, and Viognier. There is a lot of great history on the property as well. Definitely stop by and enjoy a tasting.
MAHA | Villa Creek
Enjoy highly rated and delicious wines made by Cris and JoAnn Cherry on their boutique west side estate. Consistently named one of the best wineries in Paso Robles, they hang our hat on treating every guest to a warm, informative exchange rather than a sales pitch. Since 2001, they have been sourcing Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes from vineyards that are farmed without pesticides and herbicides. The tasting room and winery are located on their certified biodynamic and certified organic MAHA Estate Vineyard.
Jada
We have been looking forward to visiting Jada for a long time and I can confidently say it was worth the wait! And it has made it on to our list as a winery that we will always visit! They produce big bold Bordeaux blends. Originally owned by the Messina family, Jada is now owned by the Ribolli family and they are making some big moves such as redoing their entire tasting room. For a small winery vibe with big flavors, Jada is a great winery to visit. (We are also wine club members now!)
Halter Ranch
This Winery has a rich history combined with a commitment to producing quality and sustainable wine. The estate spans over 2,700 acres, with 200 acres of sustainably produced wine grapes, 10 acres of walnuts, and organically certified 17 acres of olives. They produce 100% estate-grown Rhône and Bordeaux-style wines. Primary wines produced are Grenache Blanc, Grenache-based Rosé, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and the flagship Estate Reserve, Ancestor. Some of our favorites are the effervescent Rose, Syrah, and Ancestor. We brought our entire Spring shipment of the wine club with us on a trip to Cabo San Lucas to enjoy at our dinners. When the Paso Robles Weather is nice, makes sure to sit outside.
Justin Vineyards & Winery
We are also members at Justin. We are big fans of the wine, but not so much the membership (no wine member exclusivity,) the tasting room (very modern and corporate,) or the customer service (also very corporate.) But in the end, we continue to visit and stay members because the wine really is that good. (Update: We left ultimately left the wine club Spring 2022.) The tastings at the property include heavy pours, and the food is out of this world. They also have a tasting room in downtown Paso Robles that we visit. Also, feel free to swap out your tasting for a full glass of wine.
Niner Wine Estate
My newest favorite vinery in Paso Robles. Also on the west side, but a bit more south than Justin and Daou. The property is beautiful, the wines are good, and they have a great lunch menu.
Graveyard Vineyards
So far the only winery on the east side of Paso Robles that I've truely enjoyed. I really loved how small and boutique-like this winery is. It's set on a lake, the customer service is great, the wines are really good - like really good! We just had the best time getting to know the staff, sip wine, and enjoy the views!
Paso Robles Weather
In Paso Robles, the summers are hot, arid, and clear and the winters are cold, wet, and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 37°F to 89°F and is rarely below 28°F or above 99°F.
Based on the tourism score, the best time of year to visit Paso Robles for warm-weather activities is from late June to mid September.
