What are Din Tai Fung Green Beans?
Din Tai Fung Green Beans are a popular side dish served at the renowned Taiwanese restaurant chain Din Tai Fung. These green beans are typically stir-fried or quickly deep-fried until blistered and then tossed with minced garlic and seasonings, such as salt and bouillon powder. The result is a savory, aromatic, and slightly crispy vegetable dish that complements a variety of main courses. The dish is appreciated for its simplicity, rich flavor, and perfect balance of texture.
This was inspired by some of my favorite umami packed recipes from Asian restaurants like Mapo Tofu and Wonton Soup.

๐ญ Recipe FAQs
Yes, you can use frozen green beans for this recipe. Ensure they are thawed and patted dry before frying to prevent excess moisture and oil splatter.
While these green beans are best enjoyed fresh for optimal texture and flavor, you can prepare the components ahead of time. Fry the green beans and store them in an airtight container at room temperature. Reheat gently in a pan and toss with the garlic oil mixture just before serving.
Cook the minced garlic over low heat in the residual oil left from frying the green beans. Stir constantly and remove from heat as soon as it becomes fragrant, usually within 1-2 minutes. Burning the garlic can make it bitter, so watch it closely and adjust the heat as needed.
๐ฅฃ Storage & Reheating
- Reheating: To reheat, simply microwave the string beans until warmed through, or heat in a pan on the stovetop until hot.
- Freezing: It's not recommended to freeze this dish as the texture of the green beans may become mushy upon thawing.
- Storage: You can store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days.
๐ท Wine Pairing
A crisp and slightly sweet Riesling complements the savory and aromatic flavors of Din Tai Fung green beans. The wine's acidity balances the dish's richness from the garlic and bouillon powder, while its slight sweetness harmonizes with the natural sweetness of the green beans. Choose a Riesling with balanced acidity and fruity notes to enhance the overall dining experience.
๐ฉ๐ผโ๐ณ Top Tips
- Dry the Green Beans Thoroughly: Ensure the green beans are completely dry before frying to avoid oil splatter and achieve a crispy texture.
- Control the Garlic Cooking Time: Cook the minced garlic over low heat in the residual frying oil just until fragrant. Be cautious not to brown it, as burnt garlic can impart a bitter taste.
- Season Thoughtfully: Adjust the amount of salt and bouillon powder to taste. Start with a small amount and gradually add more as needed to avoid over-seasoning the dish.
